How many alerts and jams can I get per request?
Up to 200 alerts via the max_alerts parameter and up to 800 jams via the max_jams parameter. If you omit these parameters, the default is 20. Set max_alerts=200 and max_jams=800 for maximum coverage in a single request.
How do I get full coverage of a large geographic area?
If your area contains more than 200 alerts (or 800 jams), split it into smaller bounding boxes and query each separately, then merge the results on your side. Keep bounding boxes within a single country for best results. Deduplicate by alert ID if neighboring boxes overlap.
Can I filter results by alert type (accidents, police, hazards)?
Yes. Use alert_types with a comma-separated list of types such as ACCIDENT, POLICE, and HAZARD (e.g., alert_types=ACCIDENT,HAZARD). You can further narrow by alert_subtypes. Type filtering is applied after Waze returns results, so the 200-alert (or 800-jam) cap still applies to the unfiltered set.
Is historical Waze data available?
No. The Waze API returns live, real-time data only. Historical alerts and jams are not stored or retrievable. For historical traffic analysis, you would need to poll the API on a schedule and persist results yourself.
Why am I missing alerts for an area?
Waze (and therefore the API) returns up to 200 alerts and up to 800 jams per area. If your bounding box covers a region with more incidents than these limits, the extras are dropped. For high coverage, keep each bounding box reasonably small. Split a large region into smaller adjacent bboxes and query each separately, then merge results on your side. Also confirm your bbox coordinates are in the right order (bottom_left first, then top_right) and that the bbox does not cross country boundaries.
Does the Waze API return driving directions and routes?
Yes, via the /driving-directions endpoint. Pass source_coordinates and destination_coordinates to get the route, and set return_route_coordinates=true to include the route's lat/lng path (useful for plotting on a map). Set toll_passes=true to route as if you hold all toll passes and vignettes (like the Toll passes setting in the Waze app); otherwise Waze avoids roads that require one. The /alerts-and-jams endpoint returns live incidents, not routes. For Google Maps-based directions, the separate Driving Directions API is also available.
Can I get a custom plan with higher limits or a hard cap?
